Open Post: Hosted By The Teaser Trailer For “Hocus Pocus 2”
The first trailer of the long-awaited Hocus Pocus sequel is here! Hocus Pocus 2 (how long did it take ’em to come up with that one?) will drop on Disney+ on September 30, just in time for spooky season. The teaser trailer gives us a quick glimpse of the Sanderson Sisters, played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, and a longer look at the next generation of troublesome kids who can’t stop themselves from fucking with magic spells that resurrect evil witches who were burned at the stake for a very good reason (child murder).
The trailer begins with what sounds like the Downton Abbey theme, but then isn’t. A teenager, played by Lilia Buckingham (whose real-life mom, Jane Buckingham, was convicted in the 2019 college admissions scandal) wishes her classmate, Whitney Peak, a happy birthday. In my opinion, there’s a ~vibe~ between the two girls. Lilia asks Whitney and her friend, played by Belissa Escobedo, about their birthday/Halloween plans, and they tell her they’re just gonna stay in and watch scary movies. But that’s a lie. They’re really gonna fuck around with black magic and accidentally bring the Sanderson Sisters back to life. It’s not all their fault; you can also blame Sam Richardson as a magic shop owner for feeding them this bullshit: “legend has it, it’s on the sixteenth birthday that a witch gets their powers.” Upon her return, Bette announces, “Lock up your children! Yes, Salem, we’re back!” The trailer ends with Bette, SJP, and Kathy showing up to a Halloween party to take the stage. This is probably the part of the movie where the actual Sanderson Sisters are mistaken as Sanderson Sister-drag queens (one of whom will be played by Ginger Minj). Connie & Carla rip-off alert! There’s also a black cat in the trailer. Could this be Thackery Binx, the talking black cat from the original film? While Thackery, who was human-played by Sean Murray and kitty-voiced by Jason Marsden, was technically de-cursed and moved on to the afterlife at the end of Hocus Pocus, the inclusion of the kitty in this teaser got people talking. Alas, Jason Marsden confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that he had not reprised his character’s voice for the sequel. It’s a shame, cuz Thackery was hot. Specifically the pussy version. Such a shiny coat!
