Taika Waititi will bring his tone to his Star Wars movie

Taika Waititi, Star Wars movie

As much as I love the Star Wars franchise, I’m eager for future movies and TV shows to show me something new. The majority of the franchise has told stories largely locked somewhere between The Phantom Menace and The Rise of Skywalker. There’s nothing wrong with that, and I’m confident there are still plenty of stories to tell in those periods, but the upcoming Star Wars projects I’m the most excited about are the ones departing from the Skywalker Saga. One of those projects includes a new Star Wars movie by Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi.

It’s been over two years since it was confirmed that Taika Waititi would be directing and co-writing a Star Wars movie. Taika Waititi’s style isn’t something we’ve seen much of in the Star Wars universe, and given Lucasfilm’s past reluctance to allow the voices of their creators to shine through, fans have questioned just how much Waititi will be in the movie. Thankfully, Taika Waititi told /Film that he can still bring his tone to the project.

No. No, I’m able to kind of bring my tone. At the moment it’s just very early, because I … still haven’t even finished the script. I’m still trying to come up with ideas and I’m mostly kind of in that part of the process where it’s still very kind of open. And when I write, I kind of write every idea I’ve ever had and then start to kind of chisel it down into something. But I’m still throwing everything at the wall right now.

In a separate interview with The Wrap, Taika Waititi said that his Star Wars movie would not start shooting this year as he’s simply too busy with other projects. “Not this year,” Waititi said. “I’m going to be in New Zealand from August until the end of the year with ‘Our Flag Means Death’ and ‘Time Bandits’ and during that time I will still be writing. I’m still trying to figure out what the story is.Earlier this month, Waititi teased that his story will ignore pre-existing characters and expand the franchise. Bring it on.

Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters on July 8th.
